20 JULY 2009

With the summer months here, there's no better moment for spending quality time with your family. And July in the Belgium royal household means it's time for Crown Prince Philippe and Crown Princess Mathilde to take their youngsters on their annual summer day out.

This year the couple took their expanding brood to an outdoor activity park in Brugelette, Belgium – where they encountered a menagerie of small farm animals.

The three elder children, three-year-old Prince Emmanuel, Prince Gabriel, five - dressed in matching pink sweaters and faun shorts - and seven year-old Princess Elisabeth, got the giggles when they spotted a pot-bellied pig.

One-year-old Princess Eleonore – dressed in an identical version of her sister's pink flower-print top - wasn't so sure, though, watching the animal carefully from the safety of her 36-year-old mum's arms.

Meanwhile also enjoying some family time were Norwegian royals Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit. The couple were at their summer house – which they've owned since last year – on Flatholmen island in Norway, to celebrate Haakon's 36th birthday.

The couple's youngest son, three-year-old Prince Sverre Magnus sent photographers into fits of laughter as he clambered over rocks and benches in a spot of improvised gymnastics. His 35-year-old mum managed to scoop him up though to pose for a snap with his siblings, Princess Alexandra, five and 12-year-old Marius Borg.
