Why the royals are America's sweethearts

28 JUNE 2011 When Prince Harry travelled to New York in 2010, he received a rock-star welcome: ladies lined up to meet him and tickets to events on his agenda sold like hot cakes.

And, from that first twirl around the White House dance floor with John Travolta, his mother Diana was also adored Stateside.

It will probably be a similar story when Prince William and his bride cross the Atlantic for their 11-day tour of the US and Canada.

Their time in America consists of just three days in California, where anticipation is high. Even famous actors have had their agents on the phone desperately trying to secure them invites to meet the Cambridges. 

But the younger generation of royals are not the only ones to inspire enthusiasm. As far back as the Queen Mother the country has always held the Windsors in high regard.
