Joy as Queen Beatrix's nephew Prince Carlos christens his daughter

02 OCTOBER 2012

The Dutch royal family are celebrating after the newest member of their extended family was christened.

Queen Beatrix's nephew Prince Carlos of Bourbon-Parma and his wife Annemarie baptised their little daughter Princess Luisa in Italy over the weekend.

The proud parents looked on as The Bishop of Parma, Enrico Solmi, directed proceedings in a magnificent 13th century church in the centre of the city.

Beatrix wasn't present for the ceremony, with only immediate family and friends attending.

Carlos is the eldest child of the Dutch queen's sister, Irene. He inherits his title from his late father, Carlos Hugo Duke of Parma, and succeeds him as the head of the Parmese Ducal Family.

His first child Luisa was born on May 9 in the Dutch region The Hague, while her christening was a nod to Carlos' paternal ancestry.

The birth is the latest happy development for the royal following his lavish 2010 wedding to Annemarie Gualtherie van Weezel – a Brussels-based journalist who hails from a distinguished political family in the Netherlands.

On that occasion, the Dutch royals did attend, with proud aunt Beatrix taking along her son Willem-Alexander and his wife Maxima to the nuptials.
