Queen Elizabeth is not the only royal celebrating her birthday on Thursday. Princess Isabella of Denmark turns nine on the same day, and new official portraits have been released in honour of the special occasion.

Isabella's proud mother Crown Princess Mary turned photographer especially for the occasion and took three photographs of her daughter, who looks pretty in a cream top and bronze skirt. With her broad smile and hands clasped behind her back, the young royal looks grown up beyond her years as she stands in front of a gold table adorned with pretty purple flowers.

Another image shows Isabella leaning on a chair, with the sunlight beaming across her face. The princess is wearing the gold bracelet all Danish princesses typically receive on their fifth birthday and appears relaxed as she poses for her mother.

Crown Princess Mary of Denmark often releases her own photographs in honour of her children's birthdays and released similar personal photos to mark her twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine's fifth birthday in January.

Isabella's ninth birthday celebrations come just days after the Danish royal family marked another special occasion – Queen Margarethe's 76th birthday. The Danish monarch was surrounded by her nearest and dearest – including her eight grandchildren – as she greeted well-wishers from the balcony of Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen over the weekend.

The royals took it in turns to pose on the balcony for family pictures. Prince Frederik and Princess Mary greeted the crowds with their four children, followed by Prince Joachim and Princess Marie with their two children and Joachim's two older sons from his first marriage.
