The weird and wonderful gifts that the Cambridges received during their tours of India, Canada and Bhutan last year have been laid bare by Kensington Palace. The official record was released on Thursday, showing just the sort of mementos the family came home with.

Prince William and Kate were inundated with presents during September's visit to Canada, their first official tour as a family-of-four. Their children Prince George and Princess Charlotte were also lavished with thoughtful – and some unusual – gifts from well-wishers.

George was given dozens of books, magnetic building blocks and a set of Lego from members of the public. Clothes featured heavily, with the three-year-old Prince receiving pairs of woollen mittens, T-shirts, Wellington boots and even a pack of hair clips. The youngster was also given a range of soft cuddly toys including models of a black bear, a moose, a husky dog and a fox terrier.

His sister Charlotte was not to be left out. The little Princess, who turns two in May, received a toy tiara, fridge magnets, a preserved rose and some Christmas items including a lace snowflake. One individual presented the royal siblings with more practical gifts – two lunchboxes, two boxes of granola bars, two boxes of rice bars and four boxes of cereal.

Prince William and Kate were the recipients of a similarly diverse array of gifts, with everything from a pair of sunglasses to a box of toiletries presented to the royal couple in Canada. Perhaps the more unusual standout gifts were a candlestick holder, a walking stick and two USB sticks.

The Duke and Duchess also went home with a totem pole, a gift from Carcross Tagish First Nation, as well as a pair of paddles from the Heiltsuk First Nation.

Food and drink featured too. Bread mix, packets of salmon, tins of maple syrup and a few dozen bottles of wine were among the presents.

Stylish Kate was spoilt by one fan who gave her two blouses, a jacket, a jumper, a parka, two dresses, a coat, a pair of trousers, a wrap, two pairs of jeans, a skirt and a box of prints.

Meanwhile, during her trip to Bhutan in the spring, Kate was given a beautiful necklace by her host Queen Jetsun. William was presented with a handwoven rug by King Jigme. The Bhutanese royals also gave woven brown coats for the children, George and Charlotte.

In India, William and Kate, who travelled without the kids, were also the recipients of some eclectic gifts. These included a mirror, a glass paperweight, a framed film poster and a laminated sonnet.
