And if the 43-year-old wanted to be discrete, it didn't help that her father-in-law confirmed her pregnancy that same day. Pal Sarkozy, 82, told a German newspaper: "I'm glad to be having a grandchild." The pensioner added that the couple don't "want to know the sex of the child, but I'm sure it's a girl who'll be as beautiful as Carla".Earlier that day Carla - who chatted to French actor Gerard Depardieu at the launch - didn't deny she is expecting with Nicolas Sarkozy when a TV interviewer congratulated her on the rumoured pregnancy. She adeptly avoided commenting on reports by smiling and saying: "I congratulate you too."

The former model is rumoured to be expecting twins, due this autumn. And though there's still been no official confirmation of a pregnancy, the evidence is stacking up. Carla pulled out of attending the Cannes Flm Festival this week, citing "personal reasons".She also refused to answer the question of whether she is expecting a child when asked earlier this month, saying she would "remain tight lipped" to protect her husband's career. The new arrival will be the couple's first child together. Carla has a nine-year-old son Aurelien from a previous relationship while Nicolas has two sons, Pierre, 26, and Jean, 25.
