Thirty-five sometimes turbulent years have passed since Charles and Camilla, both then in their early 20s, first met on Smith’s Lawn, a polo field in the shadow of Windsor Castle.
Prince Charles was introduced to the then Camilla Shand in June 1970 by a former girlfriend, Lucia Santa Cruz, who thought they were perfect for one another. And she was right.
Charles couldn’t help but be attracted to the humorous, blonde Army Major’s daughter and they hit it off instantly, spending much of that afternoon flirting with each other. Not only did they have a lot in common but the shy and sometimes troubled Prince admired Camilla’s spirited outlook, her jolly demeanour and the fact that she was so down to earth and at ease in his company. It wasn’t long before they became close friends.
And, despite the fact that at the time she was dating his friend, Household Cavalry Officer Andrew Parker Bowles, the two began a romance. Andrew had failed to
commit to Camilla and so she felt free to step out with the Prince.
Their relationship was to be short-lived, however.
