  • Charles/Diana split
In November 1992 the rumours of Charles’s love affair with Camilla became certainty when an infamous taped recording of a private phone conversation between the couple surfaced. In the recording the pair exchanged highly personal endearments, and Charles told Camilla: “I love you.”

Diana had faced similar embarrassment in August of the same year when the infamous “Squidgygate” tape surfaced, a recording of an intimate conversation she had with James Gilbey.

The Queen’s “annus horribilis” was completed in December when John Major, prime minister at the time, announced “with deep regret” that Charles and Diana were to separate, though at the time they had no plans to divorce.
