In 1994 Charles went on the record about his affair when he admitted to Jonathan Dimbleby in a TV documentary that he had committed adultery after his marriage to Diana had “irrevocably broken down”. Though he did not mention Camilla’s name in relation to the adultery, he did admit they were close. “Mrs Parker Bowles is a great friend of mine… a friend for a very long time. She will continue to be a good friend for a very long time,” he said.

Angered by her husband’s revelation, Diana took her revenge by agreeing to be interviewed by Martin Bashir for BBC1’s flagship news programme Panorama. During the interview she admitted to her own infidelity with James Hewitt and said she found the presence of Camilla in her married life suffocating. “There were three of us in the marriage,” she famously told Bashir, “so it was a bit crowded”.

Certainly Diana had been feeling the pressure of her husband’s affair for some time. As far back as 1989 she had confronted Camilla at a dinner party and demanded she end her relationship with Charles.
