  • Camilla reviled
Following the interviews and subsequent revelations, the Queen intervened, writing to Charles and Diana in 1996 urging them to officially end their marriage and divorce. The divorce was finalised in August 1996.

Camilla’s life, meanwhile, had been turned upside down. Up until now the country-loving mother of two had managed to keep out of the limelight. While her affair with the future King of England had been an open secret among their circle and the royal family – Diana had corresponded with both the Queen and Prince Philip on the matter – it hadn’t been confirmed till now for the general public, and they weren’t happy about it.

In their eyes Camilla was nothing more than a “home wrecker” who had destroyed the fairytale marriage of Charles and Diana. She was dubbed the “Rottweiler” – the nickname Diana had given her love rival in the early days – and the press revelled in making unflattering comparisons between the two women.

The papers mused on why the Prince would want to trade his beautiful, glamorous, much younger wife for the “dowdy” older woman with her fondness for riding hats, Barbour jackets and the odd cigarette.
