  • Tragedy strikes
In 1997 she and Charles took their first steps towards being recognised as a couple when the Prince hosted a glittering 50th birthday party for her at Highgrove. Camilla arrived looking radiant in a diamond necklace which he had given her.

Camilla also accepted an invitation that year to become a patron of the National Osteoporosis Society. It is a charity close to her heart – her mother Rosalind died from the debilitating disease – but the fact that she chose then to take on a more public role was significant.

It meant public opinion was softening, and that at last she felt confident enough to step out of the shadows. But just as she was beginning to be accepted as the Prince’s consort everything dramatically changed overnight when Diana was tragically killed in August 1997.

Realising the public backlash – some people held both Charles and Camilla somehow responsible for the Princess’ death – the couple kept a low profile, and for the next two years were rarely seen together in public. Well aware that William and Harry were in deep mourning for their mother, Camilla kept her distance when the boys were staying with their father at Highgrove.
