When Camilla first met Prince Charles more than three decades ago, she famously quipped: "My great-grandmother was your great-great-grandfather's mistress, so how about it?".
The story has been around so long now, and – like tales of Charles' gold cufflinks with intertwined Cs, and Camilla's bracelet engraved with "GF" to signify their pet names for one another – it has gained mythical proportions. But even today, Charles is said to buy jewellery once owned by Camilla's forebear, Alice Keppel, for his beloved whenever the opportunity arises.
In 2000, it was reported he bought a tiara once owned by Alice, and had it reset into a necklace for Camilla. And at a Sotheby's auction in December of that year, he was rumoured to have acquired a £25,000 diamond and ruby snake pin. Years earlier, it was a black pearl brooch that was said to have caught his eye.
