Though none of his relationships has ever been confirmed as more than a "friendship" by the palace, there have been rumours – and a pair of what were thought to be matrimonial close calls – in the romantic life of the prince.

The first woman said to have stolen Felipe’s heart was Isabel Sartorius, a Madrid-born blonde three years his senior. In 1989, the press reported that romance had blossomed, but a few years later the spark fizzled.

In 1996, while attending graduate school in the US, the 20-something royal was linked with American model Gigi Howard. But the following year, he had moved on to the woman many believed would be the next crown princess, Norwegian covergirl Eva Sannum (right).

The prince was thought to be considering popping the question in 2001, when his five-year relationship with the statuesque blonde became increasingly public. In December 2001, however, one year before he met Letizia, Felipe made an unprecedented announcement that he and Eva had parted ways amicably.

While Felipe's romances were seldom confirmed, Letizia had one relationship so significant it led to marriage. In 1998, she wed one of her teachers, literature professor Alfonso Guerrero, in a civil ceremony. The union ended in divorce less than a year later.
