The future princess had confessed to friend and fellow reporter Maria Oņa that she'd fallen in love, but could not reveal with whom. On October 31, the day before the announcement was made, as talk of a possible new girlfriend for Prince Felipe began to circulate, Maria realised there were too many similarities between her friend and the anonymous new love. "Letizia, you can't deny it. I know who it is," she told her pal. "Mari, please," the newswoman pleaded in reply, "You have to tell people his name is Juan and he's a diplomat."

TVE News Director Alfredo Urdaci says that by then quickly spreading rumours had led to "phone lines burning up" at the station, and he received a visit from the star anchor who would be front page news the following day. "She spoke to me and we both agreed that once the engagement was announced," he said, "she would not be able to continue presenting the news."

And so, at six o'clock Saturday morning, just hours after appearing in what would be her final newscast, Letizia, suitcase in hand, left her modest flat in Valedebernardo housing estate. She was off to a secret location out of the limelight, but by the end of the day, the attractive young professional would be centre stage as Spain's future queen.
