During their trip, Frederik and his wife charmed their Australian hosts with open displays of affection. The prince, who wept from emotion at his wedding, had no hesitation in holding his wife's hand, exchanging complicitous glances with her and kissing her in public.
"Right here in Sydney is where our fairytale began," said Frederik, bestowing a kiss on his princess after she was named Australia's honorary ambassador for Hans Christian Andersen at an event in honour of the Danish writer's bicentenary celebrations.
He then drew laughter by telling guests that his wife had not been subjected to the "pea test" – referring to Andersen's The Princess And The Pea fairytale in which a queen tests the suitability of girls as potential wives for her son by placing a pea under their mattresses to see if they notice it.
