Albert has a wide-ranging background, having enjoyed success in a variety of fields. Before he began to participate in the running of Monaco's constitutional affairs, he had already won recognition as an athlete and intellectual. As a university student he excelled in political science, economics, psychology and philosophy. And during his schooldays he won awards as a long-distance runner, before landing a place on Monaco's national soccer team. A black belt in judo, he also impressed the sporting world by competing in the gruelling Paris-Dakar race and competing in the Olympics as part of his country's bobsleigh team.
