Family weddings are an emotional
occasion for any mother, and
although the Queen has years of
royal training it is still an ordeal for
her to be centre stage at such a
private, intimate ceremony. When
Princess Anne married Mark Phillips
in 1973, TV cameras were ordered to
switch away from the Queen's face
when Anne said, “I will”. One
newspaper reported that “the royal
jaw was clenched as hard as her
tightly gripped handbag. She
couldn't squeeze a word of the opening
hymn past the obvious lumps in her
throat. But she didn't cry”.
At Charles and Diana's wedding,
“she bit her lip with emotion and
gazed hard at her order of service,” an
eyewitness noted.
