He laid the groundwork by asking Autumn's father for permission to pop the question and ordered the ring - a three-stone affair set in white gold, reportedly costing £80,000 - from a US-based designer.

When the day arrived for him to ask for Autumn's hand, his carefully laid plans for proposing in a hot air balloon were stymied by bad weather, however.
