Karol's early years were marked by sadness. His mother died of kidney failure and heart disease a month before his ninth birthday, and his 26-year-old brother Edmund, a doctor, passed away just three years later, having contracting scarlet fever from his patients.
The youth suffered a further loss when his father, who dreamed of seeing him enter the priesthood, also died. At the age of 21, he had lost all those closest to him.
