A MODERN COMMUNICATOR
When Cardinal Karol Wojtyla was elected Pope on October 16, 1978 – the first non-Italian to head the Holy See in 455 years – he became perhaps the most articulate and outspoken leader the papacy had ever known.

Fluent in eight languages, he revealed a keen understanding of the media, steering the Vatican into satellite transmissions and producing video cassettes. And he did not hesitate to bring his powerful personality to bear in the pursuit of goals such as clarifying church doctrine and establishing rapport with other faiths.

That same desire to bring his message to the four corners of the globe earned him the title the Pilgrim Pope as he jetted the around the world promoting the causes close to his heart.
