While his achievements were undeniable, Pope John Paul was also accused of autocracy. Despite the fact that the doctrine of infallibility is usually interpreted as referring to the collective wisdom of the Pope and the cardinals, he favoured a more unilateral approach.
His rigid stance against the ordination of women and birth control has also been cited, among other subjects, as alienating some members of the Church.
