Determined to have a hand in shaping the group responsible for choosing his successor, in his latter years the pontiff appointed an unusually large number of cardinals.
The newcomers brought the College of Cardinals to an all-time high of 178 members. These include the 128 men who will now elect the new Pope, 118 of whom were hand-picked by John Paul, whose conservative ideals many of them shared.
