ROMANCING THE THRONE
The question of who might one day become Albert's princess has kept Europe's royal watchers busy for decades. Over the years he has been linked to a string of glamorous beauties, including actress Angie Everhart and supermodels Claudia Schiffer and Emma Sjoberg. His reluctance to choose a bride, however, raised eyebrows - most notably from Prince Rainier himself. "Albert possesses all the qualities to one day become the next sovereign prince," explained his father in 2000. "But first I want him to have descendents, because this is essential for the future of the principality and that of our family."

Monaco's new ruler steadfastly insisted he would only marry for love, though. And in 2002 the territory's constitution was changed to allow succession to pass to his sister Caroline and her sons, should he remain without legitimate issue. Many royal watchers believe Albert wanted to wait until he had acceded in order to have complete independence in making his choice. If that theory proves correct, Monte Carlo may soon be welcoming a new princess.
