Monaco's new sovereign was groomed to take the reins of his homeland from the cradle. Prince Albert was just one month old when he received the Grand Cross of the Grimaldi Order, but his formal training began in 1986 when his father began teaching him the administrative workings of the principality.
Prior to getting to grips with Monaco's arcane structures, Albert had studied political science at the prestigious Amherst College in Massachusetts. An eight-month tour on board a French Navy warship gave him an understanding of the military, while stints with both the Morgan Guaranty Trust in New York and Moet-Hennessy in Paris taught him about the financial world. Over the years the prince also endeavoured to expand his command of foreign languages and is now fluent in Italian, German, French, Spanish and English.
