NEW GENERATIONS
The year after they were married, Princess Caroline was born, and 14 months later – in 1958 – Prince Rainier's new bride gave the people of Monaco their heir, Prince Albert. The couple's younger daughter Stephanie was born in 1965.

It soon became clear that each child had very individual personalities. “Caroline and Stephanie are more Mediterranean – they have a strong, quick and extroverted character,” said Rainier in an interview in the early Nineties. “Prince Albert, on the other hand, is more like his mother, even physically, and is a prudent and reserved person.”

While Prince Albert remained unmarried at the time of his father's death, his younger sister Stephanie has wed twice, bearing two children with first husband Daniel Ducruet and one as a single mum. Caroline, meanwhile, married three times, having one child with her current husband, Ernst of Hanover, and three children with her second spouse, the late Stefano Casiraghi. As teens, Caroline and Stefano's photogenic trio – Andrea, Charlotte and Pierre – have become the darlings of the international press, adding a new lustre to the glamour of Monaco.
