The Hollywood-style glamour Monaco had acquired under the reign of Prince Rainier and Grace was shattered in 1982 when the universally adored princess was killed in a motoring accident. The loss particularly affected Princess Stephanie, who was also in the car at the time of the incident and was badly injured.
It was a tragedy from which the family never seemed to completely recover, and some say Prince Rainier, deprived of the stricter presence of his wife, tended to be overly lenient with his children.
Ten years after the accident, the prince spoke about the suffering his family had endured. "It has been very difficult to face tragedy, that is true, especially because what differentiates us from a normal family is that we cannot disappear or stop time," he said. “Our obligation is to keep going, to carry on, and face up to everything. That is very difficult, although perhaps beneficial, too, because we cannot wallow in misfortune, nor be blinded by it.”
