Queen Margrethe and her husband Prince Henrik greeted news of the break-up, the first in the Danish royal house for 200 years, with "deep regret" while pledging support "in the difficult times ahead". Both Alexandra and Joachim earned praise for their public conduct at a time when, poignantly, the rest of Denmark had just finished celebrating the romantic nuptials between Joachim's elder brother Frederik and his Australian bride, Mary Donaldson.
There was, it seems, never any question that Alexandra would not continue to be an integral part of the royal fold in a country she now calls home. Following the divorce she retained her royal title as well as a generous annual allowance. And, while her former husband continued to live at their main marital residence of Schackenborg Castle, near the German border, she moved into a £665,000 villa in Copenhagen with her sons. |
