As Prince William grew into adulthood it became obvious he had inherited his mother's enormous popularity both in Britain and further afield. And that isn't the only way in which he takes after Diana. The "Pin-up Prince", as he is sometimes known, has made it clear he intends to continue the late Princess' charitable and humanitarian work, while readying himself for more prominent and demanding official duties.

At the end of June he is due to represent the monarchy during the British Lions rugby tour of New Zealand and will stand in for the Queen at a wreath-laying ceremony to mark the end of World War II. Royal experts say his grandmother, who is now 79, is likely to start reducing her workload as the second-in-line takes a more high-profile role.

This summer, however, he will undertake a diverse range of endeavours, including a position working in The City, a high-adrenaline stint with a mountain rescue team, and a job in the countryside learning land management. "I very much hope that these work placements give me hands on experience in three very different but important areas," explained Wills at his graduation ceremony.
