Princess Elizabeth was born on April 21, 1926, to the Duke and Duchess of York. With the abdication of her uncle Edward VIII in 1936 it became evident she would one day inherit the "top job".
Despite the privations of World War II, which the British royals shared with the rest of the country, Elizabeth's childhood was a happy one. The Princess was extremely close to her immediate family - "us four" as her father, later George VI, protectively referred to the unit. Indeed, until they passed away, the Queen began each day with calls to her mother and sister, Princess Margaret.
