    Charles and Anne

Elizabeth was 22 when her first child, Charles, was born in 1948 and, filled with the joy of motherhood, she asked a friend: "Don't you think he is quite adorable?" The birth of daughter Anne followed soon after in 1950, although as one of the first working mothers she was frequently torn between duty and devotion to her young children.

Nevertheless she tried to spend as much time playing with them as possible, as well bathing and putting them to bed herself. Her care evoked praise from Anne, who has described her fondly as "a marvellous mother".
