    Sarah

In her autobiography, the Duchess of York recalls that in her anxiety about being punctual for her first meeting with Prince Andrew's mother she gave herself four hours to make the 90-minute drive to Sandringham.

The down-to earth redhead soon found herself welcomed into the family by the Queen, however, who shared her future daughter-in-law's love of horses, dogs and open air pursuits. Sarah has since recalled that when the royal matriarch beckoned her to sit beside her in the car or at church, she felt favoured and blessed.

And despite the ups and of the Duchess' life outside the royal family, last summer she returned to the Windsor fold at the Queen's instigation. A special invitation to join the monarch and younger members of the clan at Balmoral Castle proved that a decade after her split with Andrew the two women still share affectionate ties.
