    Prince William

The monarch shares a unique destiny with the Prince of Wales' elder son, and, keen to help him shoulder the burden that awaits, spends time with him whenever possible. While a student at Eton college, William often visited his grandmother in nearby Windsor Castle at weekends.

Their chats have served to convince the Queen he has the strength of character needed to assume his birthright. "In her grandson she sees the quiet confidence that is needed to gain the people's respect," comments one courtier.

At the 1984 christening of his younger brother Harry, a young Wills had the monarch in stitches as he raced around at the official photo session. Perhaps his devoted grandmother recognised that the youngster's fun-loving character would be something to cherish as he looked ahead to his regal future.
