    Touring

Aside from the hundreds of engagements she performs in the UK, the Queen is also a seasoned globetrotter. One of the most travelled royals in history, she has been everywhere from Sweden to Samoa, visiting over 325 countries in the course of her reign.

During a 1986 tour of China she was heard by an astonished press pack urging Prince Philip to capture her against the exotic backdrop with her own camera, because "otherwise no one will know I've been here".

Nearly a decade later, in Russia, the keen photographer got up early to take some images of the Kremlin for herself. "I got some wonderful shots," she remarked gleefully.

What tickles her most on trips abroad is the unexpected. On a tour of a US council estate in 1991 she reacted with delight when a 15-stone great-grandmother named Alice Frazier rushed forward to welcome the visitor to her home with a hug, declaring: "This is my palace."
