Polo may be the sport of kings, but hitting the slopes is the pastime of queens, princes and princesses, too. Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands has been spotted relaxing at the Hotel Post in Austria's Lech, while the Norwegian royals often stay close to home at Sikkilsdalen, where Crown Princess Mette-Marit memorably broke her ankle cross-country skiing.

For decades, Spain's King Juan Carlos along with Queen Sofia and Crown Prince Felipe has spent ski holidays at his country's premier winter getaway in the Pyrenees, Baqueira Beret, located about five hours northwest of Barcelona. The monarch is a familiar face around town, commonly visiting local establishments and attending Sunday services at nearby churches.
