THE BACKDROP – Windsor / page 2
While Eton College, alma mater of Prince William and Prince Harry, is just across the bridge, and there is also Windsor Great Park to explore, the jewel of the Windsor crown is 900-year-old Windsor Castle, a Royal residence first built by William the Conqueror in the 11th century. The Castle, which covers around 13 acres and encompasses over 1,000 rooms, is the largest occupied castle in the world. Although a fire in 1992 destroyed part of the building, it was returned to its former grandeur through a £37-million restoration project.
Perched on a hill above the river Thames, the Castle is the centrepiece of Charles and Camilla's post-nuptial plans, which include blessing at St George's Chapel and a reception at the State Apartments, both within the Castle grounds.
