Tiaras

Queen Elizabeth's spokespeople refused to lend her tiaras to a recent exhibit in the States since the royal requires them for countless functions

When Queen Rania of Jordan ascended the throne alongside her husband, King Abdullah II, she donned a stunning $2 million diamond encrusted tiara – borrowed from her sister-in-law! "Why should I spend a vast amount of money on something I will not wear very often?" was the way Rania saw it. Ladies, give her time…

In 2000, a show of 80 dazzling tiaras went on at the Museum Of Fine Arts in Boston. But when the exhibit's curator Diana Scarisbrick set about obtaining pieces from contemporary royals, she ran into some unexpected opposition from the British Monarchy.

"I got turned down because a royal spokesman explained that the Queen wears her tiaras constantly, not just at banquets in Britain but on tours abroad," says Scarisbrick. "Princess Anne gave me the same answer. Neither she nor her mother could go without their tiaras for up to nine months."
Perhaps she should have asked Elton John – organiser of the annual White Tie & Tiara Ball fundraiser – instead, since he reportedly never travels without two diamond-encrusted pieces. (For more on Elton John's gems, see Diamond Studs.)
