But like everything in Hollywood, the jewels are something of a fairytale. They say a diamond is forever, but these gems are marked return to sender. Unless of course you're Sharon Stone. In 1994, the Basic Instinct star donned a $500,000 Harry Winston necklace which she assumed – wrongly – was a gift. She eventually gave up the jewels, but only after filing a misrepresentation suit against the venerable firm. Winston isn't the only jewellers represented in Tinseltown on Oscar night. Moulin Rouge nominee Nicole Kidman set off her powder pink Chanel gown with a $4-million Bulgari choker. Julia Roberts is loyal (most of the time) to New York based Me & Ro jewellers while Catherine Zeta-Jones and Jennifer Lopez have dazzled in Fred Leighton. Elizabeth Taylor and Oprah Winfrey simply wear their own.
