Oscar Jewels

Mulholland Drive actress Laura Harring stepped onto the red carpet wearing $1 million diamond stilettoes

Mulholland Drive actress Laura Harring was similarly accompanied by a trio of bodyguards when she stepped onto the red carpet wearing Stuart Weitzman platinum and diamond-studded heels, valued at a cool $1 million – the perfect complement to the $27 million in sparklers gracing her neck.

But like everything in Hollywood, the jewels are something of a fairytale. They say a diamond is forever, but these gems are marked return to sender. Unless of course you're Sharon Stone. In 1994, the Basic Instinct star donned a $500,000 Harry Winston necklace which she assumed – wrongly – was a gift. She eventually gave up the jewels, but only after filing a misrepresentation suit against the venerable firm.

Winston isn't the only jewellers represented in Tinseltown on Oscar night. Moulin Rouge nominee Nicole Kidman set off her powder pink Chanel gown with a $4-million Bulgari choker. Julia Roberts is loyal (most of the time) to New York based Me & Ro jewellers while Catherine Zeta-Jones and Jennifer Lopez have dazzled in Fred Leighton. Elizabeth Taylor and Oprah Winfrey simply wear their own.
"The wisest actress to me is the one who chooses her dress around her jewellery," says Kersey. "If she's wearing great jewels and a simple dress, she's going to be photographed the most." Words to live by… especially when the diamonds come without a price tag.
