January 1, 2002, was a big day for
Europe, as the EU said adios to the franc, lira, peseta, deutschmark
and a host of other national currencies. Thousands of revellers gathered
at the European Central Bank in Frankfurt to ring in the new year
and a new era in European economics.
Some 300 million European citizens started using the new currency,
which in one leap became the second most important in the world
after the dollar. Indeed, the euro became the theme of New Year's
celebrations across the continent as revellers in Berlin, Paris,
Rome, Madrid and dozens of other European cities celebrated their
new monetary union.
