Central Europe was besieged by bad weather in August as rising waters devastated many areas. The Czech Republic was one of the worst hit countries and a massive evacuation operation was launched as Prague braced itself for the worst floods in over a century.

Prime Minister Vladimir Spidla had to authorise police to use force where necessary to remove people from their homes and some 40,000 were ordered to abandon the city.
