Central Europe was besieged by bad
weather in August as rising waters devastated many areas. The Czech
Republic was one of the worst hit countries and a massive evacuation
operation was launched as Prague braced itself for the worst floods
in over a century.
Prime Minister Vladimir Spidla had to authorise police to use force
where necessary to remove people from their homes and some 40,000
were ordered to abandon the city. The river Vltava burst its banks
and engulfed large parts of the city, including the historic Mala
Strana district and the palaces of Kampa island. The total cost was
put at £1.2 billion and eight people lost their lives. Across
Europe over 100 were killed in the floods, with repair estimates as
high as £15 billion.
