Nineteen-forty-eight was a memorable year for Elizabeth and Bertie. As well as celebrating their Silver Wedding, their first grandchild, Prince Charles Philip Arthur George of Edinburgh, was born on November 14.
Two years later, while the King journeyed north to Balmoral for the summer as usual, his wife stayed in London for the birth of Princess Anne, which took place at Clarence House. Driving the short distance from Buckingham Palace she was greeted by wild cheers from the crowd.
The Queen Mother had six grandchildren. Her elder daughter went on
to have two more boys, Andrew and Edward, and Margaret is the mother
of Lady Sarah and David, Viscount Linley. |
