Instead of heading for the beach this year, why not look inland for a change and book yourself a cool city break. European cities such as Copenhagen, backdrop for the recent nuptials of Prince Frederik and Mary Donaldson, Stockholm and Salzburg offer some of the hottest urban holidays around…
Traditional but at the cutting-edge of style, youthful but relaxing, Copenhagen has
always been one of the world’s most free-spirited capitals – as typified by its bicycle-riding
royal family. Don’t miss Tivoli amusement
park (open from April to mid-September). It's hectic during the day but romantic at night, when
you can watch ballet, mime or cabaret and dine in any of 40 restaurants, cafés and pubs.
Plunder the city’s boutiques for pewter, porcelain and silver in the Stroget, Europe’s largest
pedestrianised street. Soak up the atmosphere in an open-air cafe in Nyhavn, the old red
light district, which has been stylishly restored. And watch the changing of the guard at
the Amalienborg Palace. But don’t allow too much time for the Little Mermaid – she’s much-loved but tiny. And, yes, you will get a free sample at the Carlsberg Brewery – but you have to do the tour first!
