LORD OF THE RINGS - New Zealand
Turning fantasy into reality was the challenge that faced Kiwi director Peter Jackson when he set about bringing the Lord Of The Rings trilogy to the big screen. Success would require amazing special affects, but also breathtaking backdrops; and so it was that Liv Tyler, Orlando Bloom, Elijah Wood and the rest of the gang packed their bags and headed for an extended stay in New Zealand.
Consisting of two main islands surrounded by myriad smaller ones, New Zealand is famous for its landscapes. The volcanic mountains of the northern island are still thermally active in some areas, while its long sandy beaches are gently lapped by warm Pacific waters. The southern island boasts dramatic fjords, glaciers and some of the world’s best hiking terrain.
Indeed, the country is extremely popular with those in search of adventure, with everything from bungee jumping to swimming with dolphins on offer. Auckland and Wellington, the two main cities, meanwhile offer a laid-back take on nightlife.
Those of a more cultural bent will be keen to take in the native Maori art galleries and shows such as the Pounamu Performing Arts Group. This has earned international acclaim, having performed for the likes of Bill Clinton, Janet Jackson and Queen Margrethe of Denmark.
