Kate Moss and her on/off boyfriend Pete Doherty headed for the scenic town of Porto Cervo when they wanted to get away from it all for a few days this summer. And in recent years the upmarket resort has earned a reputation as the ultimate jet-set getaway with Christian Slater and Denzel Washington joining the roster of those spotted enjoying the tranquillity of its sandy shores.

The island is also home to Formula One boss Flavio Briatore's exclusive nightspot - The Billionaire's Club. And joining the racing tycoon on the island this year was Czech supermodel Eva Herzigova, who enjoyed a few days sun-worshipping there along with boyfriend Gergorio Marsiaj.

Of course simply lolling about and soaking up the rays is quite enough for some visitors, but Sardinia is also a land steeped in culture. It is home to many of Europe's most beautiful medieval structures, while the countryside of Nuoro Province is nothing short of breathtaking.
