Monegasque royal Andrea Casiraghi, who is a regular visitor to the "party island" of Ibiza, opted to head for the tranquil beaches of nearby Formentera when he took a summer break with girlfriend Tatiana Santo. And Princess Caroline's elder son wasn't the only heart-throb enjoying the sunshine. Manchester United's Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo was also spotted lounging on the white sands with a female friend.

Just a short jump away is the larger island of Majorca, which counts Catherine Zeta-Jones and the Spanish royal family among its fans. Model Claudia Schiffer was so taken with the destination she bought a luxurious villa there which she visits, with hubby Matthew Vaughan and their two children Caspar and Clementine, as often as possible.

A little further afield, off the west coast of Africa, lies another of Spain's top destinations – the Canary Islands. Former US president Bill Clinton added his name to the list of VIPs who have visited Tenerife when he jetted in recently to enjoy a few rounds of golf.
