17 JANUARY 2006
Sunny side up, Val d’Isère
If you’re hoping to get that coveted
mountain suntan, then the golden rule
is ski late and ski high. That means
finding a resort where there’s plenty of
the white stuff around until early April.
One place that definitely fits the bill
is the self-crowned king of the slopes,
Val d’Isère. With 200 miles of downhill
runs, the French resort attracts an
international jet-set crowd and, from
December onwards, more British skiers
than anywhere else in the world. You’ll
even bump into skiing fans in the
summer months on the Grande Motte
glacier, which the resort shares with
neighbouring Tignes.
Val d’Isère itself is buzzing with
activities. Adventurous types can try
hang-gliding or go on a husky safari,
while fun-seekers can sample the
nonstop nightlife with a visit to Dicks
Tea Bar. Food lovers can enjoy sunny
alfresco lunches at a tasty mix of
mountain restaurants.
For accommodation close to the
downhill action, Club Med’s newly
renovated village in the French resort
could be just the ticket. Simply strap on
your skis on the doorstep and glide
down the piste.
If you need lessons,
English-speaking instructors are
on the spot and you can even
book an all-in package that
includes not only ski passes and
lessons, but also gourmet eating
and drinks, snacks, saunas and
cardio-training.
