Prince Harry's surprise visit to the Colosseum

Throngs of tourists at the Colosseum were left speechless when Prince Harry joined them in visiting Rome's famous landmark on Monday.

The fourth in line to the throne made the most of being in Italy on royal duty by taking some time out to learn about one of Rome's most historic sights.

Dressed casually in a blue and white checked shirt and blue jeans, the 29-year-old British royal enjoyed a personal tour of the amphitheatre, one of the greatest works of Roman engineering where gladiators once fought to the death.

Once used for gladitorial contests and public spectacles, the Colosseum, also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, is today one of Europe's most popular tourist attractions.

The Colosseum, where gladiators once fought to the death, once held 50,000 - 80,000 spectators, but ceased to be used for entertainment in the early medieval era.
