Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia of Spain's wedding: relive the day in pictures

A year after they began dating, Prince Felipe announced his engagement to TVE journalist Letizia Ortiz in November 2003 at the Zarzuela Palace.

The couple had an engagement party three days later, also at the royal residence on the outskirts of Madrid.

The royal bride wore a stunning long-sleeved, collared off-white wedding dress designed by Manuel Pertegaz. Letizia completed her bridal look with a silk veil and a nearly 15-foot train.

She donned the same diamond and platinum tiara that her mother-in-law Queen Sofia wore at her wedding to King Juan Carlos.

Six months after announcing their engagement, Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia's wedding took place on 22 May 2004.

The ceremony, which took place at the Almudena cathedral in Madrid, was watched by 25 million people in Spain alone, and upon marriage Letizia was crowned a Princess.

A thrilled Queen Sofia and King Juan Carlos of Spain waved to crowds as they left the Almudena Cathedral in Madrid at the end of their son's wedding to Princess Letizia.

Letizia was attended by four pageboys (Felipe's nephews Felipe Juan Froilán de Marichalar y Borbón, Juan, Pablo and Miguel Urdangarin and three flower girls (Felipe's niece Victoria de Marichalar y Borbón, Letizia's niece Carla Vigo Ortiz and Victoria Lopez Quesada Borbón-Dos Sicilias).

After the ceremony, Prince Felipe sealed his marriage with a kiss, much to the delight of the cheering crowds who had lined the streets of Madrid to watch the royal wedding.
