Three episodes of the programme will feature the legendary band, as taxi driver Les Battersby, played by actor Bruce Jones, comes face to face with his longtime idols.

Status Quo stars Rik Parfitt and Francis Rossi – the latter wearing a neck brace as part of the storyline – will have a chance to enjoy a pint at the fictional Rovers Return Inn, and, according to reports, will eventually end up playing at Les' wedding.

"Both Rik and I are lifelong fans of Coronation Street, so to be in the Rovers filming scenes with the regulars is an ambition fulfilled," said Francis.

The first episode featuring Status Quo will be screened on September 23.
