The atmosphere was friendly enough, but behind all the back-slapping camaraderie competitors at a celeb-studded bank holiday golf tournament were very much in earnest. Among those trying out their swing for charity at the Northern Rock All-Star Cup, pitching Hollywood names against Britain's top showbiz personalities, were model Jodie Kidd, EastEnder Ross Kemp and William Baldwin.

On Sunday leggy blonde beauty Jodie took an eight-point victory over Jane Seymour and her partner Richard Burgi, Teri Hatcher's philandering ex in Desperate Housewives. Although a Brit by birth Jane, who is the star of US TV shows like Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman, was keen to show her loyalties lay with her adopted country.

"I'm clearly English but I hold an American passport," she declared. "Right now I'm American as apple pie and I will be as American as apple pie right up until we win. I'm not going to quit."

To come out on top her team needed to do battle with the likes of Irish crooner Ronan Keating, millionaire radio DJ Chris Evans, and Band Of Brothers actor Damian Lewis. But by the end of the first day of play the Europeans were storming ahead with 55.5 points to the Americans' 34.5.

Last year's event featuring Catherine Zeta-Jones and husband Michael Douglas on opposing teams turned into a nailbiter when the Europeans fell behind before mounting a recovery to take the trophy.
