Victoria Beckham jets to husband David's side after World Cup dreams are dashed

With her husband's dreams of playing in the 2010 football World Cup left in tatters, Victoria Beckham has made a last-minute dash from Los Angeles to Finland to comfort him.

The mum-of-three decided to make the 5,400 mile trip after speaking to distraught David, who had to undergo an operation on Monday after tearing his Achilles tendon during a game for AC Milan 24 hours before – an injury that has ruled him out of the summer competition.

Thirty-five-year-old Posh cancelled a series of work engagements to be by the football star's bedside while he recovers.

The couple's three sons, Brooklyn, 11, Romeo, seven, and five-year-old Cruz, are also said to have been desperate to go along, but were unable to come out of school.

"The entire family is absolutely broken by this," a source told the Mirror.

"There were a lot of tears yesterday and the kids in particular took the news incredibly badly. They were desperate to cheer their dad on in South Africa."

"Victoria is absolutely heartbroken for David, and did her best to console him all yesterday. Their phone was also ringing with messages of support from players, friends and family."

The couple are now making plans to spend Easter together with their children. Victoria is expected to stay in Finland for two days before returning to LA.

She will then fly back to Milan with her three boys in tow for the April holiday.

England fans' hopes that David would be able to take part in the World Cup were dashed on Monday when the doctor who operated on him ruled out even a slim chance the sportsman would be ready.

Dr Sakari Orava did, however, say the operation was a success and that his patient "is doing well and is in good spirits."

With David's representative insisting this is not the end of his career, the 34-year-old has posted a message on his website saying: "I am upset but want to thank everyone for their messages of support. I hope to make a swift and full recovery."
